Introduction

This week’s session of stock car and banger racing at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn, features a quick return for the mighty two-litre Saloon Stock Cars, a large entry of 1500cc Bangers, and a first outing of the year for Lady Bangers.

There are currently 48 1500cc Bangers. 38 2L Stoclk Cars and 21 Lady Bangers booked in to race.

Any driver who is not listed below may not be allowed to race if they turn up. If they are allowed to race they will not receive any complimentary admissions.

Drivers please note that the pits open at 2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.

Two-Litre Saloon Stock Cars

The ‘Heavy Metal Brigade’ were in action at our season opener when world champion 6 Simon Welton became the first man to win the Clive Grief Memorial trophy twice when he took the victory from 306 Daniel Parker and 349 Michael Allard. All three local men will be back in action and looking to mark themselves out as contenders for the track championship crown, also defended by Welton. Allard was unlucky to miss out at the final hurdle last year but it is he who leads the early-season national points.

World Champion 6 Simon Welton was in great form last time out where he won the meeting final.

Heat winners last time out were newcomer 99 Jacob Roff who impressed many onlookers with his performance, 218 Jacob Downey who won the final on a bumpy track at Stoke last weekend, and 2009 world champion 360 Carl Waterfield. The three will each be aiming to add more wins to their tally on Saturday night.

218

218 Jacob Downey has won a race at every meeting he has raced at so far in 2017 - will the winning streak continue on Saturday?

Joining Welton in the champions grade at the back of the grid are local men 428 Lee Sampson (national), 641 Willie Skoyles Jr (European), fellow Norfolk driver 730 Deane Mayes (national points) and Ely’s Sid Madgwick (English) who, like Skoyles, missed the season-opener a fortnight ago.

Multi Champion 730 Deane Mayes will be looking to rack up the points

It isn’t often that 499 David Aldous has a plain red roof on his car but that simply makes him even more of a threat as he seeks to reassert his authority on the Saddlebow Road shale. 570 Simon Venni is another super-quick driver from the red grade who is as good as anyone around his local track.

As usual, the lower graders can’t be overlooked. In addition to Roff, 127 Will Longford has impressed since graduating full-time to the formula in his smartly-prepared ex-Skoyles car. A maiden win can’t be far away. Fellow Banger man 25 Andrew Shipp is set to make his first appearance in his own car. Another who could be one to watch is 157 Max Stott – he hasn’t had the best of luck on shale so far this season but scorched to a hat trick on the tarmac at Taunton on Sunday, taking his maiden final win in the process.

127

A debut win for 127 Will Longford cannot be far away. The former Banger racer has impressed in his outings so far!

1500cc Bangers

The small-medium Bangers that are so popular with the locals make their first appearance of the main racing season, having contested a typically hard-hitting Icebreaker team event in the winter.

The 1500cc Banger Icebreaker at King's lynn last month saw lots of action and big hits

Leading the entry is a driver for whom 2016 was a breakthrough year, although most of 88 Lyndon Stark’s biggest successes came in the bigger cars. With the silver roof and gold cross, he is, however, the target for everyone to beat now, regardless of the formula.

World of Shale & National Points Champion 88 Lyndon Stark proved to be the man to beat in 2016

Arguably the 1500cc top dog for several years has been 338 Terry Garrod who had a run in the 1300cc stock cars last time out, to keep his eye in. He will be joined by his brother 339 Jack Garrod, the defending Entertainers’ League champion – so expect sparks to fly from ‘Jackpot’ himself.

339 175 ac

339 Jack Garrod was the 2016 Banger Entertainer League Champion and is always in the middle of the action!

Other likely pace-setters include perennial frontrunner 830 Lee White, UK champion 322 Tom Fox, and the largely Skegness-based 221 Jordan Storr and 322 Nicky Denman.

 322

Expect 322 Tom Fox to be one of the pacesetters

After that we move into the drivers who are more likely to going for a crash than the race wins. Expect Shunters trio 513 Sean Harvey, 514 Charlie Taylor and 768 Danny McSweeney to dish out some big shots.

514 Charlie Taylor and the Shunters can be expected to dish out some big shots!

Lone Predator 178 Kieran Bowman will also be getting stuck in, and while the same could be true for 551 Brett Jackson, ‘Jacko’ does sometimes like a good race and is more than capable of racking up some wins.

Lady Bangers

The first outing of 2017 for the ladies brings the usual names to the fore. Last year’s dominator 477 Amy Brown will aim to pick up where she left off, while 3 Danielle Ellis will look to turn the tables and recapture her form of 2015. Having already had success on her travels, she is bang in form.

477 kw

477 Amy Brown will be looking to pick up from where she left a very successful 2016 season.

127 Helen Roberts was something of a surprise victor in the British championship last year, despite her vast experience and pedigree, but will out to show she can continue that level of performance in 2017.

The top newcomer of 2016, 72 Breeze Atkin, will again be one to watch, while lady Gladiator 511 Liz Williams should be among the frontrunners. Lynn local 529 Kay Atter will aim to uphold local honour, while Dereham’s 512 Michelle Barnett is set to make the transition from tarmac to shale.
