Introduction
Icebreaker XXV, the 25th running of the legendary team event, takes place on its rearranged date of Saturday 27 January (1pm) with a massive entry of teams set to do battle. Playing support is a strong field of Junior Bangers.
There are currently 96 Unlimited Bangers booked over 27 teams and 29 Junior Banges booked in to race
Please note that any driver who turns up unbooked will not receive any complimentary admissions that they may be entitled to and may also not be allowed to race if the event is still fully booked.
Unlimited Bangers, Trackstar registered Junior Banger Drivers can book in on 01553 771111 / 07939 580652. Visiting Junior Banger drivers must book in through their own promotion.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 9.30am and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
Unlimited Banger Icebreaker
Defending the Icebreaker title are Team 22, three time winners of the event. Their captain, 22 Dave Vincent, has actually won the title on four occasions (as well as twice more in the 1500cc version) and with backing from 27 Terry King, 128 Andy Shipp and 597 Andy Ashman, will be hoping to make it five.
22 Dave Vincent will be hoping to lead Team 22 to victory with another Icebreaker victory on Saturday
Also back looking for further success are 160 Shayn Winsor’s VS Massive, the 2016 winners who are certain to be big contenders for another title, while the Dover Boys feature largely the same line-up as 2015 winners Team Bash. They are joined on this occasion by Irish superstar 388 Steve McGrath.
But it’s not all about the overall winners. The day’s entertainers’ league is just as prestigious and will be all about getting stuck in and having a good crash to entertain the crowd. 266 Callum Hall led the Bears ‘B’ to success last year with a top-drawer performance. Promoted to the ‘A’ line-up this year, Oddjob will be aiming for back-to-back triumphs.
266 Callum "Oddjob" Hall in the middle of a superb performance at last year's Icebreaker which helped to lead the Bears to the Entertainer League title
Candidates to stop the Bears? Well, there are plenty but no better bet than Team Sowter/Filmer, recently voted the team of 2017 by fans nationwide, who won the entertainers’ section of the War of the Worlds last year, and having guesting Gladiator 201 Phil Milner in their squad for this weekend.
Then there are the Shunters – runners-up in the entertainers’ league of both the Icebreaker and the War of the Worlds last year, they will be aiming to go one better this time around. Look out too for the Wild Boyz who always put on a good show.
There are plenty more teams to keep an eye on. It’s great to welcome back the legendary Steam Team to an event that they have won three times in the past, as well as finishing runners-up on eight occasions! It’s also good to welcome Wolverhampton’s Demons, a team that usually only visit for the 1500 Icebreaker.
537 Martin Brunson and the Steam Team will be back in action at King's Lynn this Saturday
A top local team of recent years, the Mad Hatters – featuring guest driver 382 Jack Foster Jr – are out in force, which is good to see, with the hard-hitting Predators also due in action. No doubt the latter will have their eyes a team who appear to be the Gypsy Crew in all but name, Team Ellis Factory.
There is also a return for Team Extreme, winners of the title back in 2010. Largely long-distance travellers led by 362 Jonny James, they have enlisted top local 757 Callum Gill which could make them a major threat.
The always superbly entertaining 362 Jonny James will be leading 2010 championsTeam Extreme into battle
Elsewhere the pair of teams entered by both Team Bert and Team Bonos look interesting mixes of drivers who should be in the thick of the action, whilst the Late Arrivals might fancy their chances of sneaking under the radar and going for glory.
Junior Bangers
The entry of under-16s is topped by world champion 131 Harley McCarthy and newly-crowned national points champion, 90 Joey Holmes Jr, who also holds the English title. Keen to gain revenge after just missing out on the silver roof will be 328 Ben Nichols, while 13 Morgan McCarthy and 450 Blake Platts complete a strong line-up of superstars.
328 Ben Nichols will be looking to get a good set of results from Superstar
Returning after six months out, 608 Lennie Murkin will be aiming to make up for lost track time, and could be one to watch, while 33 Jake Sampson and 854 Aiden Storr also start from the red grade.
77 Lewis Ivatt has won races on his last two appearances so now finds himself back in the blue grade where he lines up alongside the similarly experienced – in Junior Banger terms – 229 Harry Cobb, with 188 Codie Reeves set to star from the yellows.
77 Lewis Ivatt is back in the blues after some recent good results
From the front of the grid, 70 Tiff Unwin will be keen to shed her white roof this year, while 591 Jack Giddings is tipped as a star of the future. The same can be said for all of these youngsters who are making rapid progress in the sport.
