Saloon Stock Cars

Two forms of Saloon Stock Cars appear at the Norfolk Arena - 2L Stock Cars and 1300 Stock Cars.

If you asked a member of the general public what a Stock Car is, and to draw a sketch, they would most likely come up with a Saloon Stock Car. It comes of near 50 years of evolution when the traditional Stock Cars of the 1960’s started to turn into open-wheeled based specials, and yet there was still a large market for would be drivers to race a modified, ironed up Saloon. Thus, in 1968 the formula began at the original Aldershot Stadium and spread its wings rapidly from there.

Today there are over 150 active drivers across tracks that encompass all four corners of the United Kingdom, with its traditional mainstay regions of East Anglia, Scotland and the South West of England, with links and affiliations in Northern Ireland and mainland Europe.

Saloon Stock Car racing could be described as gladiatorial and not for the feint hearted, these are fast cars that produce some of the most spectacular race action, as drivers push, shove and hit one another out of the way, in pursuit of glory. As many as 40 of these cars on a small 1/4 mile tarmac or shale tracks leads to very exciting racing, sometimes with incidents that are to be seen to be believed.

Saloon Stock Cars are based around the following cars: Ford Mondeo, Ford Sierra or Saphire or Vauxhall Vectra. Constructed around a steel space-frame chassis within the confines of the original chassis and body construction of the car. It is front-engined and rear wheel drive, powered by either a Ford 2 litre Pinto or Ford 2 litre Zetec engine and control Yokohama tyres. Race it. Unlike circuit racing, Stock Car racing typically sees the stars of the sport start at the rear of the grid; to win they have to force themselves through the grids of cars with use of the front bumper being allowed and encouraged. Whilst it is an extreme contact sport, out and out wrecking tactics are not allowed.

There are no entry fees for the race meetings. The licence fee for the year is £110. With a range of approximately 80 meetings per season, drivers can choose to race as little or as often as they wish; either locally, or further afield cross the UK mainland, Northern Ireland and Europe. Running costs are subject to damage but roughly £200 per event.

1300 Stock Cars

The 1300 Stock Car Formula was introduced in the early 1990’s and has been thrilling oval race fans ever since.

Initially intended as a cost effective and easy to construct Stock Car for the man in the street, all these years later these cars still provide a level of affordability for the average working man to get on track and enjoy Oval Motorsport.

This Full – Contact class can be seen across the UK from Scotland to Northern Ireland and across the South of England. With over 30 cars often on track at the same time, 1300 Stock Car Racing requires the utmost in car preparation and Driver determination offering Race Fans fantastic close racing action with car on car contact! The formula is not Banger Racing of any sort though so a high degree of skill is required by the driver to remove opposition from his path – but himself also in the process!

The 1300 Stock Car in the modern era is a 1300cc or 1400cc Hatchback or Coupe mass produced car with an internal and external steel framework to protect the car and Driver, but also provide the armoury to wrestle the opposition with and running on a semi road / competition treaded tyre. The speeds these cars can achieve in such a confined space has to be seen to be believed.

There are a growing number of 1300 Stock Car Fabricators and Builders to choose from through the UK although there is still much scope for the Fabricator/Driver to build his own bespoke car. The rules for the formula are strictly controlled by the Sports governing body, with rules on car options and design, power-plants, drive train and tyres being controlled to maximise safety, control costs and maintain fairness.

As with any Class of Motorsport, your budget to a degree may control your success on track but this is a full contact Formula where the novice has every right to retaliate to a faster Star Driver coming through the field! There are very often second hand cars available for sale ranging from £1500 - £4000 depending on age and spec and specific Companies can provide a made to order service on a car ‘on the button’ or supply you all the parts to self – assemble your own car as per the formula’s rulebook which can be accessed through the link further down this page.

Race it. It is a full - contact sport and your car will be hit – but you can strike back too! Officials will monitor the circuit closely and take action against those committing misdemeanours outside the Rules!

There are no entry fees for the race meetings and the licence fee for the yearly season is £70. With a large number of venues offering meetings for 1300 Stock Car Racing, drivers can choose to race as little or as often as they wish and may choose to broaden their racing experience by participating in events further afield across the UK mainland, from Scotland to Northern Ireland and the South of England, although Championship Events may be by Qualification and Invitation only.

Running costs are subject to damage but are in the region of +/- £100 per meeting.

The drivers are some of the most fearless and talented on the ovals, circulating centimetres apart at full race speed with pushing and shoving front and back and thousands of a second in which to make a decision, go by or push on through! There is never a dull race in 1300 Stock Cars and you just never know the outcome of races!

Both forms of Saloon Stock Car Racing are great formulas which produce lots of close, exciting full contact racing with big fields of cars.
