Report: Mark Paulson
Twenty-four 1300cc Stock Car drivers were sent to Coventry on Saturday night, 12 March, in their first ‘away day’ of the 2016 season. The vast majority were East Anglian-based drivers so credit is due for their travelling efforts and the show that they put on.
Star of the meeting was 333 Dan Weavers whose heat-and-final double shot him to second in the early-season national points, behind returnee 216 Dan Booth whose new car is going as well as it looks.
Heat one was claimed by 140 Thomas House from 22 Ian Cowern and 422 Martin Taylor while blue-top Weavers and star-graded Booth worked their way through to fourth and fifth. Weavers quickly moved to the head of the field in heat two which was characterised by some excellent scraps between the blues and reds especially. That mainly served to delay most of them, but Booth was still able to come through to fifth again, as Taylor and House scored their second top-three finishes of the night.
The final was led for much of the way by 11 Matthew Brady but Weavers eventually managed to catch and pass him with three-and-a-half laps to go. White-top Brady held on for second, with Booth in third.
Thanks to all the drivers for their efforts. The 1300s are next in action on Easter Monday (28 March) when nearly 60 cars are booked to race.
